Students use basic tap steps to develop their own voices through improvisation exercises. They also gain the skills to teach friends and family!

Students build their own tap boards! They leave with a great sounding practice tool that will not hurt their knees or damage floors.

Take it to the streets

"We discuss ways that tap dance can be an effective when it comes down to communication, community development and relationship building. Often, we will hit the stage or streets to demonstrate the work we have accomplished in our workshop."

The Tap Factor @ DSD Dance Center, INc

Here's how it worked!

Director of DSD Dance Center, Inc, Dorothy Balaza Medico contacted Chris at the Tap Factor to host a workshop at her studio. The Tap Factor's In-Studio Workshop lasted two and a half hours.

The group then put their boards to use and began using basic steps through guided improvisation exercises. That was followed by learning a short routine they would perform at the upcoming Best Buddies NY friendship walk at Riverside Park in NYC.

The group took the first 45 minutes to build their tap boards and discuss their thoughts about tap dance and what role it plays in their lives. They also discussed how tap dance could be used to engage with their communities.

After a great morning of dance, the Tap Factor and DSD raised $400 for Best Buddies NY! Professional tap dancers Jimmy Sutherland and Yuka Kameda also came to support!

The Tap Factor - Miami w/ the Joffrey Ballet

"A couple summers ago, I was invited to teach tap a the Joffrey School of Ballet's Summer Intensive in Miami, FL. Artistic Director, Jo Matos wished to have a tap program that focused on inclusion. It was my goal to make a teacher out of each of the students, in that they would be able to teach what they had learned to a group on non-tap dancers..."

"...At the end of the week-long session, participating students co-facilitated a group activity with the Black Male College Explorers at Florida Memorial University - also on a summer retreat at the University. All worked together and then divided into small groups in order for the team leaders from the Joffrey Summer Intensive to lead tap dance tutorials. No tap shoes were necessary."
